Material guide

A guide to 3D stone panels

3D stone panels are panels made of narrow strips of natural stone set in staggered layers, so the face steps in and out like a split-face, stacked-stone wall. Each panel measures 2 ft x 1 ft and is 3 to 5 mm thick. Inlife shows 19 designs for façades and exterior walls.

3D stone panels are made of narrow strips of natural stone, set in staggered layers on a panel so the face steps in and out. You get a split-face, stacked-stone wall that throws real shadow, in a single 2 ft x 1 ft piece.

What they are

Each panel carries rows of thin stone strips, cut and stacked so that no two courses sit flush. Light falls across the edges and picks out every layer, which is what gives the wall its three-dimensional look. Because the stone is natural, colour and texture vary from strip to strip, so a finished wall looks like built stone and not a repeated tile.

The colour range

There are 19 colourways, from pale to almost black. They fall into a few families:

Whites and golds
S. White, Ita Gold and Mint: light, sandy walls for bright entrances.
Rusts and reds
Copper, Agra Red, Red Mint, Oxido and Indian Autumn: warm, earthy mixes of terracotta, ochre and brown.
Browns and woods
Teak Wood, Forest Brown and Burning Forest: deeper, layered browns.
Greys and concretes
Concrete, LM Concrete and Artic Storme: cool, even grey stone.
Blacks and slates
K. Black, Ocean Black, Black Shimmer and Mint Shimmer: dark slates, some with a fine sparkle in the stone.

Size and format

Panels are 2 ft x 1 ft, with stone strips 3 to 5 mm deep across the face. The staggered ends let panels run on from one another, so the coursing continues across the wall without an obvious grid.

Where they suit

Façades
A full elevation or a band across the front of a house or building.
Entrances
Framing a main door, gate pillar or porch.
Feature walls
A living room, lobby or reception wall that needs texture.
Columns and compound walls
Breaking up a long, plain surface.

Designing with stacked stone

Stacked stone looks its best where light grazes it. A wall washed from above by a downlight, or lit low from the floor, shows every course. In full shade the relief is softer. Pair warm rusts and golds with timber, cane and bronze; pair greys and blacks with plaster, glass and metal.

Keep the surrounding finishes plain. One stone wall is usually enough for a room or an elevation.

Choosing a shade

Natural stone varies, so judge a colourway from a full panel rather than a photograph. The panels are on display at the Inlife Experience Centre in Choolai, and you can take a sample to see against your own light.
