Questions

What is acrylic solid surface?

A sheet material made of acrylic resin and natural minerals, with the colour running through its full thickness. It can be shaped and joined so counters, basins and desks look like one continuous surface.

Material guide

A guide to acrylic solid surface

Acrylic solid surface is a sheet of acrylic resin and mineral fillers with the colour running through its full thickness. Pieces can be joined and shaped into counters, vanities and desks. At Inlife it is shown in 6 mm and 12 mm sheets. Nakoda Creations is the only pan-India distributor of Tristone, from Lion Chemtech Co., Ltd., South Korea.

Acrylic solid surface is a dense, uniform sheet of acrylic resin and natural minerals. The colour runs through the full thickness, so a counter, a basin and its backsplash can be shaped from one material and look like a single, continuous surface. Nakoda Creations is the only pan-India distributor of Tristone, from Lion Chemtech Co., Ltd., South Korea.

What makes it different

A laminate is a printed sheet on a board. Solid surface is the same material all the way through. It can be cut, routed and thermoformed into curves, and joins can be made almost invisible. That is why it is chosen for long counters, curved reception desks and integrated basins.

The surface is smooth and warm to the touch, with a soft satin finish that is less glossy than glass or polished stone.

Colours and patterns

Solid colours
Pure whites, creams, greys and deep tones in one flat colour.
Fine speckle
A light mineral fleck that softens the surface and suits kitchens and vanities.
Granite-look chips
Larger flecks that recall natural granite and terrazzo.
Stone and marble looks
Veined and clouded patterns that recall natural stone.

Sizes and thickness

Sheets are 2500 x 760 mm at 6 mm, and 3680 x 760 mm at 12 mm. Some shades are made in 12 mm only. The 12 mm sheet is the usual choice for counters and desks. The 6 mm sheet suits wall cladding and vertical surfaces.

Where it suits

Kitchen counters and islands
Long, joint-free runs with an integrated sink or upstand.
Bathroom vanities and basins
Vanity tops and moulded basins in one continuous form.
Reception desks
Curved and sculpted fronts for offices, hotels and clinics.
Healthcare and laboratories
Counters, nurse stations and work surfaces in clinics and hospitals.
Restaurants and bars
Bar tops, buffet counters and service stations.
Furniture and retail
Tables, display plinths, temple tables and shop counters.
Walls
Shower walls, wet-area cladding and feature walls in 6 mm sheets.

Designing with solid surface

Use the fact that the material can be curved. A counter that turns down into a waterfall end, a basin that rises out of the vanity, a desk with a sweeping curve: stone and laminate cannot do these.

Backlit designs are possible in lighter, translucent shades, giving a soft glow to bar fronts and reception desks. Ask to see backlit samples at the showroom.

Choosing a shade

Look at the shades as large pieces where you can. Speckles and veins look different across a full counter than on a small chip. The Tristone library is on display at the Inlife Experience Centre in Choolai, Chennai, and catalogues are shared on WhatsApp for specifiers across India.
