Material guide
A guide to SPC flooring
SPC flooring is a rigid plank or tile with a stone plastic composite core and a printed wood, stone or pattern surface. The pieces click together edge to edge. Inlife shows 67 designs, 4 to 6 mm thick, in wood planks, stone tiles, herringbone and patterned looks.
SPC (stone plastic composite) flooring is a rigid plank or tile with a stone-plastic core and a printed wood, stone or pattern surface. The pieces click together edge to edge, and the range covers wood planks, stone tiles, herringbone and patterned designs.
How it is made
An SPC plank is built in layers:
- Top coat
- A clear finish over the surface.
- Wear layer
- A transparent layer, 0.3 to 0.5 mm depending on the collection.
- Décor film
- The printed wood, stone or pattern image.
- Rigid core
- Stone-plastic composite, which gives the plank its firm, flat body.
- Backing
- Some collections have a 1 mm backing attached underneath.
Looks
There are 67 designs across four looks:
- Wood
- Oaks from pale Light Oak and Iced Oak to Natural, Golden and Aged Oak; teaks, hickory, elm, and deep walnuts and smoked browns.
- Stone
- Travertine, kadappa and sandstone looks, from Bianco Travertine to Graphite Kadappa.
- Moroccan and pattern
- Encaustic-style patterned tiles in crimson, beige and grey.
- Herringbone
- Short wood planks for the classic zig-zag in natural, grey and smoked tones.
Formats and sizes
Thickness is 4 to 6 mm depending on the collection.
- Wide planks
- About 225 x 1220 mm (8.86 x 48 in), and 8.86 x 36 in in some collections.
- Standard planks
- 1220 x 180 mm.
- Tiles
- 620 x 310 mm, in stone looks.
- Herringbone
- 625 x 125 mm.
Where it suits
SPC is for dry indoor floors.
- Living and dining rooms
- Wood looks that carry across open-plan spaces.
- Bedrooms and studies
- Even floors in pale or mid tones.
- Home offices
- Wood or stone looks in a consistent plank.
- Apartments
- Pale wood planks that carry one look through every room.
Where it does not
SPC is not for outdoor areas, open balconies or terraces, bathrooms and wet areas, or rooms with large daily temperature swings. For busy commercial floors, talk to us first; vinyl or carpet tiles may suit better.
Designing with SPC
Run planks along the longest wall or towards the main window to make a room look longer. Pale oaks open up small rooms; walnuts and smoked browns look more formal. Herringbone adds pattern in an entrance or living room. Stone looks suit kitchens and dining areas that want a cooler floor.
SPC, vinyl or laminate?
SPC has a rigid stone-plastic core and comes in click planks and tiles. Vinyl is more flexible and comes in planks, tiles and sheet rolls. Laminate has an HDF core with a wood décor. All three carry realistic wood looks; they differ in feel, sound underfoot and the formats available.
Choosing
Lay two or three planks side by side at the Inlife Experience Centre in Choolai to compare tones in daylight.
