Material guide

A guide to corten steel panels

Corten steel and rustic panels bring the weathered, rust-red look of corten steel to interior walls without using metal. They are 4 mm FRP sheets, 8 x 4 ft, with a patina of oranges, browns and near-black. Inlife shows 11 designs, from smooth to ribbed, dimpled and diamond embossed.

Corten Steel and Rustic Panels panels bring the weathered, rust-red look of corten steel to interior walls. Each 8 x 4 ft sheet carries a patina of oranges, browns and near-black, in a choice of textures from smooth to ribbed and embossed.

What these panels are

Corten steel is a steel that forms a deep, rust-coloured patina. These panels reproduce that look on FRP sheets, 4 mm thick and 8 x 4 ft. The colour is mottled and uneven, as on real weathered metal, so no part of the wall looks flat.

This range was previously listed as Rustic Panels. The look has not changed: raw, industrial metal in rust tones.

Because the finish sits on a flat sheet rather than on steel plate, the panel can dress a wall, a counter front or a fixture with the colour of weathered metal, while staying light and thin at 4 mm.

The textures

The library holds eleven patina designs. All share the rust palette; what changes is the surface:

Smooth and Classic
A flat face that lets the patina do the work. The easiest to use.
Mottled
Heavier colour variation, like metal left out for years.
Ribbed and Groove
Linear ribs or grooves, for a corrugated, industrial look.
Dimple and Raised
Small dimples or raised blotches that catch the light.
Diamond and Double Diamond
Embossed diamond plate, like a factory floor.
Mesh and Speckled
A fine mesh texture or a speckled surface for a subtler finish.

Where corten-look panels suit

Cafés and bars
Counter fronts and back walls with a warm, industrial edge.
Restaurants
Feature walls and dining backdrops.
Retail
Store walls, fixtures and display backdrops.
Receptions
Office and studio receptions that want a raw, handmade-looking material.
Living rooms
One feature wall in an industrial or loft-style home.

Designing with corten

Rust tones are warm and intense, so let them lead and keep the rest simple. Pair with concrete, exposed brick, black metal and reclaimed wood for an industrial look, or with cream plaster and cane for a softer, earthy room.

In a smaller room, one wall or a counter front is usually enough. Warm light deepens the oranges and browns. A wall-washer or spotlights from above bring out the texture of the ribbed, dimpled and diamond designs.

Corten steel or liquid metal?

Both give a metal look. Corten steel panels are rough and weathered. Liquid Metal Panels have a real metallic sheen, in brushed copper, bronze and pewter, and look more polished. For a raw stone texture instead, see PU Panels.

Choosing your patina

Start with the texture, smooth or patterned, then view full sheets to judge the colour variation. At the Experience Centre in Choolai you can see the full range. Samples can also be sent to offices in Chennai for viewing.
