Material guide
A guide to backlit alabaster panels
Backlit alabaster panels are translucent sheets made to be lit from behind. Switched off, they read as a pale stone surface. Lit, they glow warm, and the veining shows through like light in thin alabaster.
What they are
Each sheet is engineered acrylic (PETG), 2 mm thick, in 8 x 4 ft, with a stone finish on the face. The material is made to pass light, so the pattern you see changes with the light behind it: soft and even when dimmed, bright and veined when fully lit.
The range
The library holds 22 designs. Most sit in pale marble tones, with warm rust and sandstone shades, cooler slate greys, and a single dark stone and a single bold colour for contrast. Choosing is usually about how warm you want the glow to be.
Where it suits
- Feature walls
- A lit wall behind a bar, a reception desk or a bed.
- Counters and fronts
- Reception counters and bar fronts that glow from within.
- Columns
- Lit pillars in lobbies and restaurants.
- Ceilings and niches
- Small lit panels, shelving backs and display recesses.
Alabaster, stone or premium backlit?
Inlife carries three backlit families. Alabaster panels are engineered acrylic with a stone look. Backlit stone panels are thin sheets of natural stone, so the grain is the stone's own. Backlit premium panels are HDHMR-backed, membrane-wrapped designs with light built into the pattern. All three can be compared lit at the Experience Centre.
Choosing your sheet
Always judge a backlit sheet with light behind it, as the colour shifts once lit. Bring a photo of the room or the drawings to the Experience Centre in Choolai, Chennai, and we will set the options out side by side. Samples can also be sent to offices in Chennai for viewing.
