A guide to cork panels
Cork panels are thin decorative sheets cut from the bark of the cork oak, 1.5 mm thick, with a metallic finish. Their soft, granular surface adds texture to walls, shutters and furniture. Inlife shows 71 designs in 8 x 4 ft sheets, with 10 x 4 ft available by order only.
Cork Panels are thin decorative cork sheets for walls and furniture. Cork is the bark of the cork oak, and in these sheets its soft, granular surface is printed, patterned or flecked with metallic colour, so a wall or a shutter gets a natural texture from a sheet barely 1.5 mm thick.
What cork panels are
Each sheet is a fine layer of cork, around 1.25 to 1.5 mm thick. Up close you see small grains and a matt, slightly velvety surface. Because the sheet is so thin, it suits flat surfaces of furniture as well as walls.
The standard sheet is 8 x 4 ft, with 10 x 4 ft available by order. Some patterned designs come in 8 x 2 ft, and a set of cork strips comes in 120 mm widths, 8 ft long, for banding and inlays.
The cork collections
The library has three groups, most of them in warm neutrals with a set of deeper colours:
- Kalamkari cork
- Printed and patterned cork that borrows from Indian textile motifs. Taupes, browns and sand tones, with a few navy and aqua designs.
- Metallic cork
- Plain cork grain with a fine metallic fleck that catches light. Warm neutrals, greys and a handful of deep colours.
- Kalamkari cork strips
- Narrow 120 mm strips in the same patterns, for edges, bands and panel inlays.

Designing with cork
Cork is warm by nature, so it pairs well with light oak, linen, cane and brushed brass. For a sharper look, set a deep navy or charcoal cork against white walls and black metal.
The metallic designs change with the light. Warm, low lighting brings out the fleck in the evening; in daylight it is barely there. The strips work as a frame: use them to edge a panel of plain cork, or to break up a long run of laminate.
Cork, fabric or leather-look?
All three are thin sheets that soften a wall or a piece of furniture. Cork has a natural, granular grain. Fabric Panels have a woven, ribbed face. Faux Leather Laminates carry an embossed leather texture. For a natural, handmade feel, go with cork; for an upholstered look, compare fabric and leather-look sheets.
