Material guide

A guide to customised wall panels

Customised wall panels are carved 3D panels in MDF or HDF, made to the relief, size and colour of your design. They turn a flat wall into a surface of light and shadow, from soft waves to sharp facets. Inlife shows 70 designs in 8 x 4 ft and 10 x 4 ft sheets.

Customized Wall Panels are carved 3D panels in MDF or HDF, made with the relief, size and colour set by your design. They turn a flat wall into a surface of light and shadow, from soft waves to sharp facets.

What customised wall panels are

Each panel is a board of MDF or HDF with a pattern routed into its face. How deep the cut goes sets the relief, and the light falling across it does the rest. The finish is painted or coloured to suit the room.

Because the pattern is cut rather than moulded, the same design can be produced at different sizes and in different colours, and a panel can be made to suit a particular wall.

The pattern library

The library holds 70 relief patterns. They fall into a few broad families:

Waves and ripples
Soft, flowing lines that move across the wall. A gentle choice for bedrooms and lounges.
Quilted and tufted
Cushioned, upholstered-looking reliefs, often used behind a bed.
Facets and pyramids
Crisp geometric cuts that throw sharp shadows. Striking in lobbies and offices.
Scales and petals
Repeating organic motifs for a richer, decorative wall.
Deco fans and arches
Art-deco inspired forms for hotels, restaurants and formal rooms.

Sizes, thicknesses and colours

Panels come in 8 x 4 ft and 10 x 4 ft, or to size. There are five board thicknesses: 12 mm, 16.5 mm, 18 mm, 25 mm and 35 mm. Thicker boards allow a deeper relief.

The catalogue shows each design in a rendered colour, from whites and greys to warm neutrals, deep colours and a few bold shades. These renders are only a guide; the colour is set for each wall.

Where they suit

Living rooms
A TV wall or the wall behind a sofa, where one carved surface becomes the focus of the room.
Bedrooms
A full-height headboard wall in a quilted or wave pattern.
Lounges and lobbies
Hotel lounges, clubhouses and lift lobbies where the wall needs to hold attention.
Offices
Reception backdrops and conference room walls, often in a brand colour.
Hospitality
Restaurants and bars, where a deep relief shows up well under low lighting.

Designing with carved panels

Relief needs light. A grazing light from above or below lengthens the shadows and brings the pattern forward; flat front lighting makes it softer. A white panel shows the relief most clearly, while a deep colour gives a velvety effect.

Choose the scale of the pattern for the viewing distance. Fine reliefs suit bedrooms and cabins, seen up close. Large, bold cuts suit lobbies and double-height walls, seen from across the room.

Customised panels or ready-made?

Inlife also carries ready-made patterned panels, such as Readymade HDHMR Panels, Textured Wall Panels and Interlocking Panels, which come in set sizes and finishes. Customised panels are the route when the wall has its own proportions, when you want a specific colour, or when the relief should be deeper than a ready-made sheet allows.

Choosing your pattern

Bring the wall size, a photo of the room and any colour references to the Experience Centre in Choolai. We will help you shortlist patterns and thicknesses and look at each one at full scale. Samples can also be sent to offices in Chennai for viewing.
