Material guide
A guide to PU stone panels
PU stone panels for exteriors are high-density polyurethane panels moulded from real stone, so the face carries the texture of rock, ashlar or river rounds in deep relief. Inlife shows 88 designs, 20 to 110 mm deep depending on the pattern, for elevations and boundary walls.
PU stone panels are polyurethane panels moulded from real stone, so the face carries the texture of rock, ashlar or river rounds in deep relief. They give an elevation or boundary wall the look of built stone in large, light panels.
What they are
Each panel is cast in high-density polyurethane from a mould taken off real stone, then colour-finished. The relief is deep, from about 20 mm to 110 mm depending on the pattern, so the wall throws real shadow. Exterior-grade panels are made for façades; an interior range is offered for feature walls inside.
Patterns
There are 15 patterns. Broadly:
- Rock face
- Rough, split stone with heavy relief for a rugged, natural wall.
- Ashlar and blocks
- Stacked, squared stone in courses, from large blocks to smaller bricks.
- Rounds
- River-stone rounds and squared rounds for a softer, pebbled texture.
- Strips
- Narrow mosaic strips in layered bands.
- Flowing
- A wave-like stone surface that moves across the panel.
Colours
Most patterns come in seven colours: Ice White, Ivory, Beige, Ash Grey, Cement Grey, Charcoal Black and Pumpkin Orange. A few patterns add a corroded black stone. Ivory and Beige look like warm sandstone, the greys like cool granite, and Charcoal Black like dark slate.
Sizes
Panel sizes vary by pattern: 4 ft x 2 ft is the most common, with others at 1.5 ft x 4 ft, 1 ft x 3.8 ft, 2 ft x 2 ft, 4 ft x 2.5 ft, 5 ft x 2.5 ft and 8 ft x 2 ft.
Where they suit
- Elevations
- A full façade, or a stone band across the ground floor.
- Boundary and compound walls
- Long walls that want texture and weight.
- Gate pillars and entrances
- Framing the approach to a home or building.
- Feature walls
- Interior grade for living rooms, lobbies and restaurants.
Designing with PU stone
Deep relief shows best under raking light. Wall washers or uplights along the base throw long shadows across the stone at night. Choose one pattern per wall and keep a plain surface next to it.
PU stone or 3D stone panels?
3D stone panels are real stone strips, with the variation of natural stone. PU stone panels are moulded, so they offer larger formats, deeper relief and a wider choice of stone types and colours.
