Material guide
A guide to fluted panels
Fluted panels are wall panels with long, parallel ridges that give a wall vertical lines and a play of light and shadow. Inlife shows them in WPC, PVC and polystyrene, 12 to 26 mm thick, in 116 designs across wood, marble-look, solid and painted tones, for TV units and feature walls.
Fluted Panels are wall panels with long, parallel ridges that give a wall vertical lines and a play of light and shadow. They are a quick way to add relief to a TV unit, a reception backdrop or a full feature wall.
What fluted panels are
A fluted panel is a long, narrow plank with rounded or squared ridges along its face. Set side by side, the planks form a continuous ribbed surface. The Inlife range is made in polystyrene, PVC and WPC, in thicknesses from 12 mm to 26 mm.
The look depends on the flute: narrow ridges feel fine and tailored, wide ones feel bold and graphic.
The collections
- Fluted wood-look panels
- Wood-grain faces in walnut, natural oak, honey, pale oak, smoked and grey-wash tones.
- Pastel fluted planks
- Solid colours in warm neutrals, greys, whites and a few deep and bold shades.
- Fluted wall panels
- Wider panels in walnut and marble or stone-look finishes.
Sizes and formats
Most planks are 8 ft, 9 ft or 2900 mm long, with selected designs also in 9.5 ft. Widths vary by collection: narrow planks from about 115 mm to 128 mm, 10 in planks, and wider panels of about 304 mm. Longer lengths suit tall walls with fewer breaks.
Where fluted panels suit
- TV walls
- The most common use: a fluted backdrop that frames the screen.
- Living rooms and bedrooms
- Behind a sofa or a bed, or as a band at headboard height.
- Reception backdrops
- Offices and clinics, often with a logo set on the fluted wall.
- Retail
- Display walls and counters where vertical lines draw the eye.
- Wardrobes and columns
- Fluted fronts on cabinets, and pillars wrapped in narrow planks.
Designing with flutes
Fluting is about shadow. A strip light at the top or bottom of the wall grazes the ridges and makes them stand out; flat, even light makes them softer. Vertical flutes add height to a room; horizontal flutes stretch a short wall.
Wood-look flutes pair naturally with cane, linen and brass. Pastel planks suit Scandinavian and Japandi rooms. Stone-look and marble flutes give a TV wall the look of a hotel lobby with no stone slab involved.
Fluted panels and their neighbours
For curved walls and columns, Inlife also carries Flexible Fluted Panels. For building fronts and balconies there are Exterior Fluted Panels in WPC. For a flat, grooved look rather than a ribbed one, see Groove Panels. The interior Fluted Panels on this page are the choice for straight walls, TV units and furniture indoors.
Choosing your fluted panel
Decide on the flute width first, then the finish. Bring a photo of the wall to the Experience Centre in Choolai and we will set planks side by side so you can judge the spacing of the ridges at full scale. Samples can also be sent to offices in Chennai.
