Material guide
A guide to faux leather laminates
Faux leather laminates are artificial leather sheets, 1 mm thick, for walls, panels and furniture. They carry the grain, stitching and padded look of leather upholstery in a palette from pale stone to cognac, espresso and ink. Inlife shows 82 designs in 8 x 4 ft and 8 x 2 ft sheets.
Faux Leather Laminates are thin artificial leather sheets for walls, panels and furniture. They carry the grain, stitching and padded look of leather upholstery, in a palette that runs from pale stone to cognac, espresso and ink.
What faux leather laminates are
Each sheet is about 1 mm thick, with an artificial leather face embossed with grain, quilting or stitched patterns. Up close it has the soft, slightly yielding feel of upholstery; from across the room it looks like a leather-clad wall.
Sheets come in 8 x 4 ft and 8 x 2 ft. The thin format lets the same leather finish run from a wall onto a bed back, a wardrobe or a cabinet.
The colour range
The library holds over 80 leather panels, grouped by tone:
- Stone
- Pale greys, putty and off-whites, for contemporary rooms.
- Tan
- Light, warm saddle tones that sit easily with oak and cane.
- Cognac
- Rich amber-brown, the classic club-chair colour.
- Espresso
- Deep chocolate browns for formal, enclosed rooms.
- Ink and deep colours
- Navy, bottle green and near-black for dramatic walls.
- Bold colours
- A few brighter shades for retail and hospitality accents.
Where leather-look panels suit
- Headboards and bedroom walls
- The most common use: a padded, tailored wall behind the bed.
- Wardrobes
- Leather-faced wardrobe shutters for a dressing room or master bedroom.
- Office cabins
- Director's cabins and boardrooms that want a formal surface in brown or tan.
- Hotels
- Room headboards, lounge walls and lift lobbies.
- Furniture
- Bed backs, console fronts, bar counters and panelled doors.
Designing with leather
The leather tone decides how the room feels. Tan and cognac feel warm and relaxed beside walnut, brass and linen. Espresso and ink feel formal, especially with dark wood and soft lighting. Stone greys keep things light and modern.
Leather looks most tailored when framed. A slim metal beading or a wood border around each panel gives the wall the look of upholstered joinery. Warm, low-angle lighting brings out the grain and the stitching.
Faux leather or real leather?
Faux leather laminates give you the grain, the stitching and the colour of leather in a consistent sheet that can be matched across a whole wall and its furniture. For a softer woven look, compare them with Fabric Panels; for a natural, granular surface, with Cork Panels.
Choosing your leather
Start with tone, then texture: a smooth grain for a plain wall, a quilted or stitched pattern for a headboard. Bring a photo or the room's other finishes to the Experience Centre in Choolai and compare full sheets side by side. Samples can also be sent to offices in Chennai.
