Material guide

A guide to matt acrylic panels

Matt acrylic panels are acrylic sheets with a smooth, low-sheen finish, about 1.3 to 1.5 mm thick, for kitchen shutters, wardrobes and wall panels. They give a soft, velvety look with very little reflection. Inlife shows 69 matt colours in 8 x 4 ft sheets.

Matt Acrylic Panels are acrylic sheets with a smooth, low-sheen finish. They give kitchen shutters, wardrobes and wall panels a soft, velvety look with very little reflection.

What matt acrylic is

Each sheet is 8 x 4 ft and about 1.3 to 1.5 mm thick. The face is matt, so the colour looks the same from every angle, with no glare or mirror effect. To the touch it feels smooth and fine.

Because it is a thin sheet, it dresses shutters, panels and furniture faces, giving joinery a modern, painted-lacquer look.

The five finishes

Matt finish
Plain matt colours in whites, greys, warm neutrals and a few bold shades. The core of the range.
Metallic matt
A low-sheen metallic in greys and soft metal tones.
Linen finish
A fine woven texture under the matt face, in greys, warm neutrals and a few bold colours.
Flute finish
A fine fluted texture for a ribbed look on shutters.
Stone finish
A subtle stone texture in greys and warm neutrals.

Where matt acrylic suits

Kitchen shutters
Modern kitchens where the cabinetry should look soft and low-sheen.
Wardrobes
Bedroom and dressing-room wardrobes in pale neutrals or deep tones.
Wall panelling
Matt panels behind TV units and beds, often in the same colour as nearby shutters.
Furniture
Consoles, side units and office furniture.

Designing with matt

Matt surfaces scatter light instead of reflecting it, so colour looks richer. Greys and warm neutrals suit minimal rooms. Deep teals and bold shades work best as one accent: a bank of shutters, an island or a study unit.

Matt pairs well with natural textures: oak, stone, cane and linen. Use the linen, flute and stone finishes where you want touch as well as colour, such as on wardrobe fronts at hand height.

Matt or high gloss acrylic?

High Gloss Acrylic Panels are bright and reflective, and suit compact kitchens and bold wardrobes. Matt acrylic has a soft, even face and suits relaxed, minimal rooms. Many projects use both: gloss on upper shutters, matt below. See them side by side at the showroom.

Choosing your shade

Matt colours change with light more than you expect. Bring your drawing and a sample of the counter or flooring to the Experience Centre in Choolai, and compare full sheets in natural and warm light. Samples can also be sent to offices in Chennai for viewing.
