Material guide
A guide to PU stone panels
PU stone panels are polyurethane wall panels moulded and coloured to look like natural stone. Split-face, stacked and cracked-slab reliefs give an interior wall the shadow and texture of stone. Inlife shows 88 designs, from 20 to 110 mm deep depending on the pattern, in sizes from 2 x 2 ft to 8 x 2 ft.
PU Panels are lightweight polyurethane wall panels moulded to look like natural stone. Split-face, stacked and cracked-slab reliefs give an interior wall the relief and shadow of stone, without the weight of the real thing.
What PU panels are
Each panel is high-density polyurethane, cast in a mould taken from stone and finished in a stone colour. The relief is deep, from 20 mm to 110 mm depending on the design, so the wall casts real shadows.
Because the panel is moulded rather than quarried, every panel of a design carries the same pattern, which makes large walls even and predictable.
The patterns
There are fifteen relief patterns: Berlin, Egyptian, Greek, Japanese, Madrid, Manton, Mega, Shanton, Terrado, Turkey and Vienna Stone, plus Flowing Water, Mosaic Strips, Opera Rounds and Square Rounds. Between them they cover a handful of distinct surfaces:
- Split-face stone
- Rough, chiselled faces for bold feature walls.
- Stacked stone
- Layered strips, like a dry-stone wall.
- Cracked slab
- Larger, flatter blocks with fine fissures.
- Wood-grain strip
- Long strips with a grained surface, between stone and timber.
- Rounds and geometric
- Circular and square reliefs, and mosaic strips, for a more decorative, contemporary wall.
Colours and sizes
Most patterns come in seven colours: ice white, ivory, beige, ash grey, cement grey, charcoal black and pumpkin orange. Together they cover sandstone, slate, dark stone, light marble and rust looks.
Most panels are 4 x 2 ft. Other formats include 4 x 2.5 ft, 5 x 2.5 ft, 8 x 2 ft, 1.5 x 4 ft, 1 x 3.8 ft and 2 x 2 ft, depending on the design.
Where PU panels suit
- Living room feature walls
- Behind a TV or sofa, where a stone wall becomes the focus of the room.
- Restaurants and cafés
- Counter backdrops and dining walls that want a rustic, textured feel.
- Retail
- Store walls and display backdrops.
- Hotel lobbies
- Reception walls and lounges.
- Partitions and columns
- Stone-look columns and partition faces indoors.
Designing with PU stone
Deep relief needs grazing light. A strip light at the top of the wall throws shadows across split-face and stacked patterns at night. Ivory and beige suit relaxed homes; charcoal and cement grey look modern.
Keep the rest of the room simple. Plain plaster, timber and simple furniture let the stone wall stand out.
PU panels, stone veneer or 3D stone?
PU panels are moulded, with deep, bold relief. Stone Skin is a thin sheet of real stone with a flat, subtle surface. 3D Stone Panels are real stone strips stacked on a panel. For building fronts, see PU Stone Panels (exterior). You can compare all of them at the Experience Centre.
Choosing your stone
Pick the pattern for the look you want, then the colour for the light. Bring a photo of the wall to the Experience Centre in Choolai, or ask for samples to be sent to your office in Chennai.
