A guide to parametric ceilings
A parametric ceiling is built from many shaped fins, each cut slightly differently, so that together they form a wave, a ripple or a canopy overhead. Each ceiling is designed for its room, in MDF or HDF, finished in white or wood tones. Inlife shows nine designs.
A parametric ceiling is built from many shaped fins, each cut slightly differently, so that together they form a wave, a ripple or a canopy overhead. Each ceiling is designed for its room, in MDF or HDF, finished in white or wood tones.
What it is
The word parametric comes from the way the design is made. Instead of drawing every fin by hand, a form is set out digitally and the software works out the profile of each fin along it. The fins are then cut to those profiles and set in sequence, so a flat ceiling becomes a flowing, three-dimensional surface.

Material and finish
The fins are MDF or HDF, and some designs use PVC pipe. Finishes include painted white, for a pure sculptural form, and wood tones from light to dark, for a warmer ceiling. Sizes are customised to each room.

Designing with light
Plan the lighting and the form together. Linear lights between the fins, or a wash from the edges, pick out the curve and throw layered shadow. A white ceiling shows the form most clearly; a wood finish feels warmer and closer.
Parametric or baffle?
A baffle ceiling uses straight, regular fins in standard profiles. A parametric ceiling uses fins of varying shape to make a curved form, and is designed for each project.
