Material guide

A guide to backlit stone panels

Backlit stone panels are thin sheets of natural stone, about 2 mm deep, that let light through when lit from behind. The veins, bands and mineral colour of the stone glow, so a wall or counter becomes a soft light source.

What they are

The sheets are natural stone veneer, 2 mm thick, in 8 x 4 ft and 4 x 2 ft. Because the face is real stone, no two sheets are the same, and the pattern deepens once the light comes on.

The stone range

The library spans marble, slate and quartzite, sandstone, limestone, travertine and concrete-look categories. Shade names hint at the character: Aqua Blanco and Silver Galaxy for pale, cool stone; Autumn Rustic, Indian Autumn and Terra Red for warm rust; Ocean Black, Ocean Green and Rainforest Brown for deeper, banded slate.

Backlit stone or stone veneer?

Both are thin natural stone. Stone veneer is chosen for its surface in daylight; backlit stone is chosen for how it looks with light behind it. Backlit alabaster panels give a similar glow in engineered acrylic, with a more even pattern.

Choosing your stone

See the sheet lit and unlit before you decide, as warm and cool stones change differently. Bring a photo of the room or the drawings to the Experience Centre in Choolai, Chennai, and we will set the options out side by side. Samples can also be sent to offices in Chennai for viewing.
